Green Smoothie Love

I have to admit to being highly skeptical about green smoothies. I thought they would taste disgusting. But I was intrigued enough to give them a try and now I’m addicted. Can’t get enough. And neither can Ms10.

To start off, I recommend you add plenty of sweet fruit and creamy additions (see more below), and ease yourself in with just a small amount of mild green – like baby spinach. It won’t be long until you start craving more green and adjust the ratios accordingly.

I should also mention that we are lucky enough to have a high speed blender, which produces super smooth smoothies. These really make a big difference if you are able to borrow or afford to buy one.

So, what should you blend?

Base liquid: coconut water is my favourite, but water is fine. You can also use coconut milk or any nut milk.

Sweet fruit: pineapple, orange, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mango, dragon fruit, star fruit, banana (best frozen), figs, dates (go easy on these – they are very sweet)…

Creamy additions (optional): banana (yes, it’s multipurpose!), coconut milk, coconut yogurt, cashews (presoaked), macadamia nuts (presoaked), almonds (presoaked), fresh young coconut meat, avocado, chia seeds, tahini

Greens: kale, silverbeet, rainbow chard, baby spinach, pak choy, beetroot leaves, tatsoi, etc… (whatever looks fresh at the farmers market is best)

I also add ice.

Then just blend it all together and enjoy. You’ll soon discover your favourites. Currently, my favourite combinations are:

  • Kale, strawberry, pineapple, banana, coconut yogurt & coconut water; &
  • Rainbow chard, pineapple, orange, coconut water & macadamia nuts
